Expecting Magic

On Sunday, I walked the length of my boyfriend’s backyard to cut some green onions for a sauce we were making. As I walked along the path to his garden, I thought “Something magical is about to happen to me.” When I got back to the house, I was curious because nothing had happened. Then, I realized I had forgotten to pick a jalapeño pepper, so I searched his freezer for some frozen ones. I found a bag in the back of the freezer that was melted and burned. My boyfriend quickly unplugged the fridge as we stared in shock at the brown, melted area in the back of the freezer. I had recently broken my dishwasher and had it hauled away by a handy man so I texted him and asked if he knew of any used fridges and would he haul this one away for us. He texted back immediately, “Yes, I am on my way!”
For four months, his friends had been unable to use their garage because of a huge stainless steel fridge in the way that they had been meaning to sell. For $200 on a Sunday, my boyfriend’s kitchen was transformed, all because of my hunt for a hot pepper and my expectation that something magical was going to happen!
